So here is the update on our little "Super Buddy..." Avery has been struggling to eat anything other than pureed food for a while now. We would try to feed him anything with chunks in, and he would projectile vomit. This was a little alarming at first, but since it started at 6 months we just assumed we needed to wait a little while longer to give him solid food. The problem did not resolve its self, so at the 1 year check up we talked to the doctor about it. She was a little alarmed, but did not want to jump to any conclusions.
So the doctor sent us to Texas Children's Hospital for testing. The test gave us good news and bad news. The good news is that it does not look like there is a physical abnormality that is causing the swallowing issue. The bad news is that we now have a group of issues that are "possibly" the reason for the inability to eat solid foods. The list is as follows:
1) Avery is aspirating when he drinks (he is breathing what he drinks, and it is settling in his lungs). This was apparently not an issue while breastfeeding, because the breast milk was not harmful to his lungs. Now that he is on regular milk it is causing issues (that we thought was asthma).
2) Avery is also getting a lot of ear infections from the aspirating, and now we need to see a ENT to possible get tubes in his ears.
3) Avery possibly has Hyperactive Gag-reflux disorder... You can imagine what this causes.
4) Finally, The long of the short of it is---- that Avery will be in speech/occupational therapy for a while to teach him to eat solid food and feed himself.
On a positive note though, Avery has taken a few bites of french fry and a macaroni noodle. We are starting to see progress!
